This summer Little Mama learned to ride a bike and she's thrilled to join the bike riding ranks of the older sibs! Last year she rode a bike with training wheels but this summer we tried a different approach. We ditched the training wheels in favor of a balance bike. We found a great deal on a FirstBIKE and purchased it for Little Mama. You can see how it works in the videos at the end of this post. (If you received this in the email you may need to click the title of this post to view them on my blog.)
The FirstBIKE is light enough for her to carry and easy to maneuver due to the limited turning radius. It has no pedals so the focus is on balancing--the hardest part of learning to ride a bike. This particular bike is designed for 2-5 year olds so Little Mama at five and a half was perhaps a little big for it. Also, once a child has used a bike with training wheels, it's harder to adjust to a balance bike as they are used to pedaling without having to balance.
So there was a bit of a rough start as she had to learn to balance right off the bat but within the week she was "riding" along side her brothers and sister using her feet to propel herself then lifting them to balance and coast.
Once she was coasting and balancing well, we got out the big bike with no training wheels.
It worked! She was riding the big bike in less than five minutes.
Up next on the FirstBIKE....
